Water4.0 (Digital Water): the evolution of the remote control for the efficiency of the integrated water cycle

"Digitization" is an investment driver not only for the Industry 4.0 plans but also for Utility4.0.

When we speak about Water Companies we also talk about Water4.0 (or Digital Water), to indicate how digitization can impact in managing the integrated water cycle.

Since several decades, SCADA and remote systems have become increasingly important for the optimal conduction of aqueducts and waste water.

Today, with extensive connectivity, mobile and wearable devices, Augmented Reality, the Industrial Internet, IIoT, BigData and Analytics, we see an ever-increasing convergence between OT operational  systems and IT systems, designed for reporting and decision support for those who actually run and manage the Utility Company.

In this workshop, we will see how some methodologies, technologies and tools available today may give appreciable results and benefits, with a positive return on investment, innovating and respecting humans and the environment, compressing energy costs, helping to limit water consumption and reducing losses.

Utility Companies, academics and technology suppliers will present practical cases and discuss openly, making their experiences available to the audience of the workshop, ready for an open exchange of ideas and experiences.

Quality control in drinking water: Swan introduces the new handheld for the analysis of the main chemical parameters

With the introduction of the new Chematest 30 and Chematest 42 Swan broadens its range of applications for handheld water quality testing devices.

During the workshop will be presented the main technical characteristics of the new Chematest , they are able to determine the key parameters of drinking water such as the concentration of disinfectant (residual chlorine, combined, total, dioxide and ozone), iron and aluminum (dissolved). In addition to these essential parameters, is also introduced the possibility to determine turbidity and to mount optional probes for pH, redox and conductivity. The new Swan handhelds are waterproof (IP67), equipped with a rechargeable lithium battery and a large internal memory to record the main data (measured value, operator ID, location ID). Communication takes place via integrated Bluetooth 4.0 (low energy).

To guarantee the reliability of the measurement under any circumstances, even in the new Chematest models it will be possible to use certified verification kits.

New production strategy in the water treatment sector

The segment of chemicals for water treatment needs to evolve in line with the increasing attention to ‘social’ effects of these productions. For this reason, even basic chemistry productions for such applications must embrace the principles of responsibility, sustainability and innovativeness. Società Chimica Bussi SpA has focused its industrial development strategy on this segment and the new PAC and Sodium Chlorite plants, currently under construction, have been planned based on these principles and with the aim of demonstrating that the basic chemistry productions can be done in an environmentally sustainable way and with outputs that can positively affect the environment. During the presentation the Società Chimica Bussi strategy will be explained and the main technologies that characterize the two mentioned productions will be shown.

The role of the chemist for the protection of health in the water sector

2018 will be a year to remember for all Italian chemists and physicists. In fact, between the end of 2017 and the beginning of this year, the Parliament approved the Lorenzin Law which sanctioned the change of name of the National Council of Chemists - 90 years after its establishment - in the National Federation of Chemical Orders and of the Physicists. An important turning point for the profession that, going under the healthcare, will see us even more committed to addressing important topics such as sampling and analysis of liquid waste but also to work to help develop the best technologies for the environment and for citizens.

Reduction and management of water leakage - comparison experiences

The seminar proposes as a basic theme the performance improvement in water distribution networks management with particular regard to the reduction and control of water leakage. This issue has assumed a strategic importance for water utilities and, more generally, for the water services sector in fact ARERA, in Resolution 917/17, set the level of water leakage among the main macro-indicators. in managed networks. The aim of the seminar is to encourage a comparison between the water utilities who face this problem during last few years with the support of Idragest. The seminar will be developed in a single session in which the used approach, the problems encountered and the main results obtained in a series of case studies will be presented. The seminar will be closed by a round table in which the participating managers will be able to share and compare opinions, experiences and future strategies for the reduction and containment of water leakage.

Using InfoWorks for district heating networks

InfoWorks modeling software, renowned for its sewer, water and gas networks simulations, is now able to compute district heating networks calculations. It can keep track of hydraulic and thermal processes, allowing to represent assets such as power stations, expansion tanks, insulated pipes, valves, pumping stations, pressure regulators and final users described with their power demand. The simulation results return pressure, head, temperature, heath loss, etc. in both forward and return line.
