EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 2024/3019 – Micropollutant Removal: Technological, Regulatory and Industrial Challenges

Programme Abstract

The EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (EU) 2024/3019 introduces new challenges for wastewater treatment and the removal of emerging micropollutants. The technical conference organised by UIDA – Union of Environmental Protection Companies will explore the regulatory, technological and industrial aspects related to the transposition of the Directive into national legislation and its implementation in Italy.

The discussion will focus on the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), the financing mechanisms and cost coverage of advanced treatment processes, and the sustainability of investments for water utilities. The conference will also examine the available solutions for micropollutant removal, including ozonation, activated carbon and membrane systems, highlighting both opportunities and practical implementation challenges.

The event will feature a preview of the first results of the SAFF40 pilot project carried out by Acqua Novara.VCO for PFAS removal, alongside practical experiences in wastewater treatment and water reuse. The conference will conclude with a roundtable discussion and a question-and-answer session, also involving the CNR (Italian National Research Council), to examine regulatory gaps and compare operational needs, technological developments and investment strategies.
