Currents of Capital Report 2025: Strategic Sector Topics Take Center Stage at Accadueo

The new Report Currents of Capital 2025, by Roland Berger, describes a rapidly evolving scenario where water is establishing itself as a strategic asset.

The data reveals a dynamic sector, driven by rapidly growing capital, climate urgency, and an ongoing technological revolution: all themes at the heart of the next edition of Accadueo, the landmark event for the water sector, scheduled from October 7 to 9 at BolognaFiere.

Rapidly Expanding Investments

According to the report, 96% of decision-makers in the sector plan to maintain or increase investments in 2025, with a significant 71% who expect growth of up to +50% compared to 2024.  A trend already underway: over 30% of respondents allocated more than 500 million dollars in 2024 alone.

This data confirms that water has shifted from a secondary resource to a strategic infrastructure asset, with a central role in economic development, sustainability, and environmental security processes.

Western Europe at the Center of Strategies

60% of global investments in the sector are concentrated in Western Europe, which emerges as a priority area for development in the coming years. This is linked to the need to renew obsolete infrastructure, increase system efficiency, and improve water resilience in the face of climate change.

At the same time, transatlantic synergies between Europe and North America are strengthening, while Asian organizations are beginning to expand into Western markets, attracted by technological leadership and stable growth opportunities.

New Challenges: Water Scarcity and Climate Resilience

The report highlights that 88% of operators consider water scarcity a critical challenge, set to worsen in the coming years. This figure reflects the growing pressure on limited water resources, exacerbated by extreme climate events, pollution, and constantly increasing urban demand.

Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a strategy with innovative structural interventions: new networks, more efficient treatment systems, predictive capabilities, and intelligent resource management.

Technology and AI: The Drivers of Innovation

To address these challenges, innovation will be key. 92% of respondents identify advanced technologies — from desalination to smart management — as a decisive lever for the future of the sector.

Particularly relevant is the role of artificial intelligence (AI): over 60% of operators recognize its transformative potential throughout the entire water cycle, with applications ranging from:

  • predictive maintenance,
  • network optimization,
  • real-time resource management,
  • leak detection and reduction.
