Thermal Destruction of PFAS During Full-Scale Reactivation of PFAS-Contaminated Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

Programme Abstract

The thermal reactivation of granular activated carbon (GAC) that has adsorbed PFAS, carried out on an industrial scale in a multiple-hearth vertical furnace, achieved a PFAS destruction efficiency exceeding 99.99%. Analytical results confirmed the complete removal of PFAS from the carbon, the formation of fluoride during treatment, and very low atmospheric emissions, demonstrating that thermal reactivation is a reliable technology for PFAS destruction.
