Recent rainfall has contributed to improving reservoir levels in Sicily. According to ANSA, volumes show an increase of 57% compared to 2025 and 38% compared to the previous month. This is a positive result, but it does not fully capture the picture of regional water management, which remains linked to effectively usable capacity, infrastructure conditions and the overall functionality of the system.
An improvement to be read in context
The recovery of reservoir levels represents an encouraging signal, especially after a prolonged period of difficulties. At the same time, the news confirms that the water issue cannot be assessed solely on the basis of weather trends. Alongside available volumes, factors such as sedimentation, maintenance, operational status of facilities and the system's capacity to make the resource genuinely available for various uses continue to play a significant role.
A broader issue affecting Southern Italy
The Sicilian case is part of a wider picture affecting Southern Italy and, more generally, Mediterranean areas most exposed to water resource pressure. The latest Istat data show that in 2025 households reporting irregularities in water supply increased to 10.2% at national level, and that in Sicily more than half of households — 57.6% — say they do not trust drinking tap water.
Accadueo as a meeting point for the water sector
Against this backdrop, the nineteenth edition of Accadueo in Bari will bring together companies, institutions and sector professionals to discuss some of the most relevant issues facing the water supply chain today.
The only international reference event in Italy dedicated exclusively to the civil and industrial water sector, Accadueo is one of the leading forums for companies, institutions and professionals, with a growing participation from Southern Italy and Mediterranean countries.
The return to Bari, scheduled for 26 and 27 November 2026 at the Nuova Fiera del Levante, reflects the ambition to strengthen the event's presence in a strategic area for the sector and to consolidate dialogue among water service stakeholders. The choice of city is also linked to the role of Central and Southern Italy as a bridge towards the Mediterranean, the countries of the Mattei Plan and Africa.
Against this backdrop, the main topics of the conference programme include: water supply, leakage detection and reduction, digitalisation of systems, treatment and reuse of water resources for agricultural, civil and industrial purposes, wastewater treatment, desalination, sustainability, regulatory updates, innovation and research.
