The €1 billion allocation for the Italian water system is now entering its operational phase.
Accadueo had already anticipated the introduction of SFNIISSI in the news item “The MIT allocates one billion euros to strengthen the water system”, highlighting the creation of a new instrument dedicated to infrastructure investments and the safety of the water sector.
With the opening of the call, the National Financial Instrument for Infrastructure Investments and Safety in the Water Sector is now operational: from 6 May 2026, applications can be submitted to access the resources provided under the NRRP – Mission 2, Component 4, Investment 4.5.
The measure, with a total budget of €1 billion from the Next Generation EU-Italy Fund, supports strategic interventions aimed at making water infrastructure more efficient, safe and resilient.
What the call finances
The instrument supports investments aimed at the modernisation of water infrastructure, with particular focus on improving the efficiency of resource use, the safety of structural works, the resilience of infrastructure and the reduction of network losses through digitalisation.
Grants are provided as non-repayable contributions: up to 90% of the cost of the intervention for efficiency improvement and structural safety projects, and up to 85% for interventions aimed at reducing losses through digitalisation.
Timeline and procedures
Applications can be submitted exclusively online through the SFNIISSI Platform, prepared and managed by Invitalia, from 12:00 on 6 May 2026 until 12:00 on 28 May 2026. The accreditation phase for proposing entities has been active since 29 April 2026.
Companies operating in the water resource management sector and public-sector entities carrying out similar activities may participate, regardless of size and operating throughout the national territory.
From the SFNIISSI call to the discussion on water infrastructure at Accadueo 2026
The opening of the SFNIISSI call confirms the central role of investments in making the Italian water system more efficient, safe and resilient. The areas of intervention covered by the measure — from infrastructure modernisation to loss reduction and the digitalisation of networks — reflect some of the main challenges currently facing utilities, Public Administrations, designers and companies across the supply chain.
Accadueo 2026, scheduled to take place in Bari on 26 and 27 November at the Nuova Fiera del Levante, will also focus on these priorities. The nineteenth edition of the event dedicated to the civil and industrial water sector supply chain will provide an opportunity for discussion on water treatment, water reuse, desalination, system digitalisation, sustainability and innovation applied to the water cycle.
